Blood
Cascade
|
The centre of Darlington used to be linked on a sharp incline between
the buildings on the east and the covered market on the west. This made
it easy for the stallholders to clean the area after the market. To reflect
this history a shallow cascade of water now runs down the steps which
seperate High Row and West Row. The colour and grain of the granite suggests
the blood which was washed down the road from the meat stalls. The pattern
of the cascade is defined by a barcode indicating the location, cost,
date of construction and materials of the water feature, bridging the
past market activity with present day commerce.
