Information

On the outskirts of Colchester lies the Hythe, an inland dock that used to be a thriving port. The area has rapidly declined due to the increasing use of road transportation. The community that existed to support the Hythe industries no longer exists leaving only swans who’s beauty provides a stark contrast to the breaker’s yard overlooking the quayside. Barges came up with the tide, unloaded, and then turned round in a swing bay to leave with the outgoing tide. This turning point had to be moved with the building of a road bridge that was too low to allow boats to pass. At considerable cost this turning point was relocated down river, but was never used.
