Your Shit Smells Like Roses challenges the idea that human waste is something inherently dirty or without value. Instead, it proposes that waste is a regenerative resource when separated and treated appropriately. The sculpture compares three water streams—black water (toilet waste), grey water (from sinks and washing), and clear water—which nourish three roses growing from toilets. Rich in nutrients, black water produces the healthiest rose, while chemically contaminated grey water weakens plant growth despite its clean, perfumed smell. Over time, the rose fed by human waste develops the richest natural fragrance, revealing a striking reversal: what seems foul becomes fertile, while what appears clean proves toxic. The work suggests that waste is simply the right thing in the wrong place.
