Horror Vacui

Horror Vacui celebrates the vibrant tile design that characterises Portugal’s architectural landscape, particularly in the town of Torres Vedras, where these decorative elements punctuate the environment. This project meticulously surveyed the town’s diverse array of tiles, resulting in a decorative yet non-functional representation of its structures.

Horror Vacui transformed these designs into a puzzle of hybrid patterns, blending the unique characteristics of each tile. A hundred tiles, each featuring distinctive designs that could only align with specific counterparts, were sent to participants worldwide, who then gathered in Torres Vedras to assemble the puzzle. This collaborative effort required participants to negotiate and cooperate, as each tile’s unique pattern could only connect to another in one formation.
