Bells attached to sheep grazing around St Mary’s church in the centre of Ashford chimed a diminished seventh chord, frequently the penultimate chord used in a composition’s final cadence to the tonic. This never-quite-resolving random music generator functioned as a primitive software. Their consistent interest in John Cage’s various experiments into limited authorship was demonstrated by using sheep as a way to create aleatoric music.
